Schrade SCAXE2

Detailed Review:

Pros:

  • Holds an edge

  • Lightweight (Compared to other hatches I’ve Owned)

  • Includes ferro rod

  • Decent carry sheath

  • Cuts and splits like a champ

Cons:

  • Ferro Rod tends to fall out of the handle after continuous use

  • After prolonged use, I get a hotspot on my pinky The Schrade SCAX2 has proven to be a handy little hatchet. Mine was delivered sharp out of the box and its 3Cr13 titanium coated stainless steel blade seems to maintain its edge. At the rear of the head, the hatchet includes a hammer pommel with an aggressive surface. This makes short work of hammering tent stakes and tarp tie-outs.

The hatchet weights in at just over 1.5 lbs. The handle is made from a PA & TPR rubberized material filled with fiberglass and is said to be cold resistant. I have not had any issues with the hatchet in cold weather however, the temperature drops to the teens for a few weeks of the year here in Arkansas.

Schrade has included a ferro rod designed to store inside of the handle. I really like the thought however, over time the ferro rod works its way out of the handle. I’ve lost it a time or two but luckily managed to find it. It would be great to see Schrade modify the design to ensure a better fit.

Conclusion: Would I buy it again? Yes. After owning the SCAXE2 for more than 6 months, I bought one for my Dad for fathers day. He had used mine several times at deer camp and threatened to steal it. Now he has his own.
